Horton Park Primary School

‘A GOOD school with outstanding behaviour for learning and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural ed

ucation’

Ofsted report - March 2012.

We are building a reputation for positively involving the children in taking responsibility: for themselves, their learning and their environment.

Our school is full, with 400 children on roll, the age range is 4-11 years as our feeder nursery is a separate school – Canterbury Nursery School and Children’s Centre. We are becoming a two-form entry school and have twelve age-group based classes.

Built in 1961, our school has had a series of structural improvements and is in excellent condition, with a central hall, three groups of classrooms and a staff facilities wing.

Our new extension opened in January 2013 to provide more additional classrooms, and a larger visitors’ entrance and offices. Our high quality, new Library is being used for wider reading within and beyond the classroom and media facilities are planned for 2015. We have a large Early Learning Outdoor area, which is currently being developed, and a multi-purpose sports pitch, outdoor classroom, stage and ‘Trim-Trail’.

We are proud to serve the Canterbury housing estate, and we support our families and children by working closely with our community, local ‘MYBD5’, national and international schools, and other agencies. Canterbury has a diverse population; 78% of our learners are from ethnic minority groups; many of our White British families have Irish and Scottish relatives and aro

und 60% of our learners are Muslims, mainly of Pakistani origin, with a number of Eastern European and mixed race children. We also have several African and Caribbean, Kosovan and Iraqi families. Some other languages children speak are Mirpuri Punjabi, Urdu, French, Hindko, Arabic, Kurdish, Polish, Latvian and Slovak. Our Parental Involvement worker works closely with families. Attendance, which is at around 95%, is strongly encouraged. Our doors open at 8:45 am daily and home time is at 3:15pm. There are before school Breakfast and Learning Clubs, and many after school activities.

Our School's Values

1.     We make sure that everyone in our school community is continually learning, valued and respected.

2.     We work together to broaden all our horizons and for each of us to explore our opportunities so we make positive life choices.

3.     We are forward looking and ambitious, and we use our resources for our community today and to make a difference in the future.

We are Proud of Our School

Horton Park Primary History:

The Canterbury Estate was built in the 1930s. By the 1960s the growing population needed a school of their own and many of the local people had Irish roots and were Roman Catholics so….. a brand new primary school was opened on our site and blessed on November 18th 1961 by George Patrick Dwyer Bishop of Leeds. Father M.J. Dunleavy was the Parish Priest and mass was celebrated here on Sundays.

Our school was then transferred to Bradford Council Local Education Authority in 1974 as St. Michael’s First School. In order to reflect this change of ownership, in 1998, by community vote, we became Horton Park First School.

As a First school we only taught ages 4 to 9, up to Year 4, and then through school reorganisation on 1st September 2000 we became Horton Park Primary teaching children up to 11 years old again.

In 2003 we received funding from the ‘Space for Sports and Arts’ for an Art/media room used in school holidays as well as during the school day and a community and school use Multi-Games Pitch which is well used in the evenings and at weekends.

In 2008 we began our journey towards becoming a two form entry school and now have doubled in size. Our new classrooms and offices were opened in September 2014 and our Library and Learning Resource Centre is now open for children to use and, as we expand our stock, will soon be ready for our learners and adult family members to share and borrow books together at the end of the school day.

During this time the local community has also welcomed a wealth of family links from across the globe. There are many interesting and varied personal histories and family members provide a vast range of cultures and perspectives on life. We draw on these to enrich our learners’ curriculum and their understanding of the world.

Contributions towards the writing of the school’s history are most welcome.

Please contact Mrs Sarah Dawson, our Headteacher, if you have memories of your time at the school that you would be willing to share.
